I have been working as a Correctional Officer for 20 years. I know that everyone who see the news thinks there is an answer to crime and gun violence in America. I can tell you there is not! What i can tell you that there is a need to revise the court system and how we do business in our courts. When a felon comes back into the court with a gun charge most of the time that offender can accept a plea (This is a bargain for reduced sentence) for a lesser charge and the courts drop the gun charge. So in affect this is taking the teeth out of the gun laws. When a person assaults their significant other it is the same thing. The person usually takes a plea for a reduce sentence or probation, gets back on the street and assaults that person again in most cases causing death.
I know that Mr. Costas probably means well when he speaks of a gun culture. I sense that like most people that are not gun enthuists don't understand what it means when people say responsibie gun ownership. Getting rid of hand guns when people shoot people tragically is like getting rid of cars because people kill others while drunk, and in most cases if you have a enough money and a good lawyer you would probably get a reduce sentence. The say that Justis is blind but i can tell you it is not.
It's time as a Nation that we look at our courts and start demanding that their do their jobs first. The complaints of most courts is that the system would be backed up and would be over burden with work. People need to realize that there will always be people doing bad things to other people and you don't have to use a gun to do it.
